St Lucy's Day

December 13th is celebrated as Saint Lucy day. Here's what Paola - a teacher from Italy has written about it:Today in many countries of Europe it is celebrated Saint Lucy the patroness of the blinds, in fact in the northern countries like Sweden it's the light feast. Even in the extremely southern part of EU in Sicily it's an important festival. On this day we celebrate rites in churches and we eat neither bread nor pasta, but just rice or corn. We cook a lot of special dishes on this occasion: rice balls or "arancini" made of rice, minced meat, peas, cheese and corn with ricotta cream or chocolate cream, very delicious. I'd like to know if in your country you celebrate it for example in Norway, Anita could tell us how this festival is celebrated in her country.
This photo shows some "arancine".

Hello Ireland!

We are students from Estonia. We have reviewed your presentation about the area you live in. It was very interesting and we enjoyed reading it. However, it left us some questions that we would like you to answer

  • Do you like wearing the uniform in your school?
  • * They're ok. It's good that we don't have to spend time in the morning deciding what to wear and there is no competition between students over clothes. It's also easy when we go on school trips to find each other.
  • How long are your summer holidays?
  • *Unless you're doing either your Junior/ Leaving Certificate exams you get holidays from the start of June till the end of August.
  • How many people are there in one class?
  • * Class sizes differ depending on the number of students in your year group. For example, there are160 students in our year and we have been divided into six classes of around 25 students.
  • Can you dance Irish dances like the Riverdance?
  • * No unfortunately not! There are many students doing Irish dancing in our school. Our school held a Feis (fesh); an Irish dancing competition in October where many of the schools' dancers won trophies and medals. The dancers in Riverdance are the best in Ireland and go on tour all over the world.
  • What do you think about your school motto?
  • *We like our school motto. It reminds us when we are taking part in sports or other activities that we are stronger as a team rather than as individuals.
  • Do you like your school?
  • *Yes. We have a very modern school and we are lucky with the facilities and support that we have. The teachers are nice and are very good at what they teach.
  • How many injuries does a normal hurlingplayer get?
  • *Some hurling players tend to be very accident- prone and can get some type of injury in almost every match. Most injuries would be to either the players hands and legs. Very rarely is a player seriously injured.
  • Do you have any school bands?
  • *There are three main rock bands in our school; Mr. Sands (they have a link on YouTube),Suitable for vegetarians and Animal Beats. We also have a school choir and a traditional Irish music group.
  • What are your physical education lessons like?
  • * The P.E. teachers in our school follow a programme during the year so we get to do a lot of different activities. We do badminton, basketball, rounders, soccer, dancing, aerobics, horseriding, hurling, gymnastics and rugby :). Some of the girls in our class enjoy p.e. but others don't like sports at all!
  • How many people in your school play hurling?
  • * There are around 30 girls on the camogie (female version of hurling)squad at school. The guys in our school are a lot more interested in playing and they are divided into Senior and Junior teams.
  • Are there more boys or girls in your school?
  • *It's mainly even
  • At what age do kids start the school there?
  • *Kids start primary school when they are 5 and we start secondary school around the age of 13 :).

..So quite a lot questions.. :)

We're looking forward to getting your answers in this blog. You can also answer them as a comment

THANK YOU FOR THE ANSWERS:-)

Hello from Estonia!

Hello from Estonia! Welcome to the blog! We are students from Kadrina Secondary School, Estonia. Our school is a comprehensive school, where students can learn from the age of 7 to 19, 12 years. We would like to make friends with you, learn about your countries and culture, and of course, have fun together. We think that when we communicate with each other, talk about the things that interest us, our past and future and do it together we can enjoy what we are going to do. If we want to do something good, we should do these things together - it's always better than doing them alone. Students of Kadrina Secondary School and teacher Merike

Forum: Let's do it together!

Hello everybody,
I've created a forum for our project where you can discuss the different topics. I tried to have the layout match the blog, please let me know if you like it. And if you don't, please tell me what I should change. Since this is my first ever created forum, there might be things that still don't work or that are arkward. Please tell me, if I should make any changes to improve the forum.
Here is the link:
http://dotogether.forumieren.com/
I don't know if you first have to register to be able to comment on the forum. Try it out and if it doesn't work, please notify me.
Have fun!

Hello from Germany

Hello everybody!

This is our school, Marianum Fulda. It's a private catholic school attended by students from the age of 10 to 19. If you want to learn more about it, you can have a look at the school homepage, but unfortunately, it's only in German.

Here you find lots of information (in English) about the city of Fulda, where our school is situated. Fulda in the middle of Germany is the 'entrance' to the beautiful Rhoen Mountains.

Fulda with the cathedral and St Michael's Chapel.
